Kate-lundySenator for the ACT Kate Lundy and Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh have today welcomed the announcement by NBN Co that work on the high speed broadband rollout in Gungahlin is scheduled to commence in October this year.

It is estimated that the average time from the start of preliminary works to the activation of first services will be around 12 months.

“Gungahlin residents suffered poor internet connections and slow speeds for more than a decade under the former Coalition Government,” Senator Lundy said.

“The Gillard Government is delivering on our commitment to provide all premises in Australia with affordable, high speed broadband, no matter where they live.”

Dr Leigh said commencing the rollout in October was welcome news for Gungahlin residents.

“This is very welcome news and will ensure the 3,000 first release sites in Gungahlin will have high speed broadband by Christmas next year,” Dr Leigh said.

The rollout announcement follows the definitive agreement with Telstra and the finalisation of the construction contract with Silcar for detailed design and construction in the Gungahlin area.

NBN Co have confirmed that once the rollout begins in Gungahlin they will continue to roll the network out across the ACT until it is complete.
